Students arrive at NECI already anticipating their externship. The process of selecting an educationally fitting externship begins almost immediately with an 18 week Professional Development class that Career Services teaches throughout the student’s first resident term. During the first 12 week class students are introduced to the externship process, create a resume and cover letter, develop interpersonal communication skills through mock interviews and discover various techniques to help them research externship sites and regions. Students also create and develop their own personal website or e-portfolio to showcase their learning and development. During a second 6 week class, students focus on writing effective externship specific goals, budgetary and financial considerations, industry expectations, pertaining to hostile environments and harassment, and self-marketing with continued development of their e-portfolio and review of online social media such as LinkedIn.
